Presidents Message

Message from our President Geoff Meagher

I was born on the edge of L’Ancresse Common in June 1955 – a short iron from the 10th tee box. My childhood was spent on the Common, exploring and being chased by the green keepers! The big sprinklers at the time was one way of cooling off on a hot summer day!

I was a junior member and then joined the L’Ancresse Golf Club in 1972 at the age of 17, and I have been a member ever since.

My father was a joint member of the L’Ancresse and Royal Guernsey Golf Clubs for many years and my older brother, Michael King, is a long-standing member of the L’Ancresse Golf Club. Golf has been in my blood since a very early age, from playing friendly and competitive golf to attending and being part of the social side of golf.

I have been on various Committees on and off for 20 years and one of my life’s highlights was serving the L’Ancresse Golf Club as Captain in 2014.

The L’Ancresse Golf Club is in a very strong position mainly due to people who work behind the scenes and who dedicate a lot of their spare time to the day to day running of the club. We have been extremely lucky in the past that the club has always run on a full membership and held a waiting list. Unfortunately, due to social changes and family life this is now changing. This will provide a challenge for our Club going forward. However, L’Ancresse Golf Club has an excellent community spirit which I and the rest of the Committee would like to see increase over the forthcoming years, for all members and their families.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing President, Tony Blondel, for his hard work and dedication over the past 3 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Tony as his Vice Captain in 2013 and working with him during 2019. I would also like to thank Micky Boot for his outstanding year as Captain.

As we venture in to a new year, the L’Ancresse Golf Club celebrating its 125th anniversary, it gives me immense pleasure in welcoming Alan Mahy as our Captain and Bill Le Huray as our Vice Captain. It should be a great year for golf and celebrations.

To this day, I still walk the Common every day – not quite the naughty boy back in the early 60’s. Now in my 60’s you will find me with my little brown spaniel, Coco. Come and have a chat, walk with me or just stop and look at the fantastic views!

Being asked to serve this great club as President is an honour. I look forward to serving the next three years as President.
