Mid June Catch up

Match v Grande Mare – 1st May 2016

This is a match that we always look forward to, but never seem to do well, and this year was no different going down by 6 1/2 to 3 1/2.

The dinner and presentation in the restaurant after the match was very well received and attended by both teams.

Match vs. Walton Heath 12th – 15th of May

The match vs. Walton Heath was not a great result for the L’Ancresse Golf Club as we went down by 17 matches to 3. We were going to play the match off scratch, but when Walton Heath saw how many low handicap players were in the party, they decided to play the match off handicap. Off scratch the score line would have been better for us but the result would still have been a win for Walton Heath.

However, the whole trip was a great success with 45 members in the party.

The hospitality from Walton Heath members is second to none. The welcome evening put on by the members on the Thursday was great, but maybe too much of the falling down liquid was enjoyed by the L’Ancresse players that night, myself included, and that may have contributed to the match result.

A presentation dinner on Friday evening after the match was very well attended, with a full restaurant at the parent Club. (for those of you who not been to Walton Heath before the restaurant is quite large)

The meal was excellent, Ken Carre thought it was the best ever, the bar staff were very good too, staying open quite late for us.

The Pro was very helpful throughout the whole weekend, even supplying some free trolleys on the Sunday for us.

Captain’s Day – 4th June

The day was the best I could have hoped for.

From the first ball being struck to the last the weather was perfect, no wind and thin clouds in morning, sunshine and no wind in the afternoon.

140 Players and weather perfect, I thought the scores would be low, I was not disappointed 43 points by Ashley Dye. The gifts I received on the day were plentiful and very much appreciated. Dinner in the evening was very well attended by 86 members and guests. The food was also very good and the money raised from the raffle and donations by members and guests throughout the day amounted to over £800.

The whole day was very successful and it made me feel very proud to be Captain of the L’Ancresse Golf Club.

Pembroke cup L’Ancresse v Ladies –  8th June

Once again the weather took its toll on the day “FOG” came in so thick the match had to be called off after 12 holes resulting in the match being a half. As a result, the ladies retained the trophy.

The meal in the evening was well attended and greatly appreciated by all

A big thank you to Laila and her staff.

De La Rue Shield – 12th June

Jamie Blondel had a difficult time picking the first team, but he came out with a good one.

The morning foursomes was the same as the B team a win by 3 matches to 1. A notable win by Tim Carter & Andy Harte over Bobby & Andy Eggo by 7/6.

The afternoon singles were a different story, with some very tight matches, but the Royal coming out the better side by 5 matches to 3.

This made the overall score 6 matches each, therefore the L’Ancresse retaining the Shield.

Two more trophies go back in the cabinet.

A good result for L’Ancresse

The results of my monthly Charity draw for May were:

  • Peter Blampied – £200
  • Alan Mahy – £ 70
  • Ron Le Page – £ 30

Last but not least a huge congratulations from all at the club to Steve Mahy on becoming Island Champion. A richly deserved win. We wish him well in the Channel Island final.
