Well done to Gary Macfarlane for winning the Guernsey Matchplay Championship on Sunday in a hard fought match against Nigel Vaudin. I had the privilege of refereeing the match in the afternoon and joined the fray with Gary 3up after the morning session. After a nice lunch with the GGU I took over the mantle from Keith Austin and play commenced. Both players were striking the ball well and conditions were perfect for good golf.
Gary went 4up at one point but after an uncharacteristic error on the 7th where he lost the hole to a bogey 4 he was never to enjoy the honour again. Nigel started to whittle away at his lead and a birdie 3 on the 13th saw him get the match back to a I hole deficit but from there the battle would see each hole halved, including a half in three’s on the 17th. A short two foot putt on the 18th was all it needed for Gary to secure his win and the 2012 title. Good luck to Gary in the final in three weeks time.
